Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth cancer is a disease caused by genetic changes leading to uncontrolled cells growth and tumor formation. Most cancers are related to environmental, life style , or behavioral exposures. The environment is not limited to the biophysical environment ( e.g. exposure to factors such as air pollution or sunlight ) but also includes life style and behavioral factors.
Over one third of cancer deaths worldwide ( and about 75-80% in the united states ) are potentially avoidable by reducing exposure to known factors. Tobacco use accounts for 25-30% of cancer deaths.
Many molecular and cellular changes involved in the development of cancer accumulate during the aging process and eventually manifest as cancers.
People with type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop liver or pancreatic cancer. They also run a higher than normal risk of developing colon, bladder and breast cancers.
“Cancer and diabetes are two sides of the same coins”. asserted Debbie Thurmond, PhD, chair of the Department of molecular and cellular Endocrinology at the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Institute at City of Hope.
Obesity is major risk factor for both diseases. Excess fat may begin that disruption process, as well as increased inflammation, a known trigger for both diabetes and cancer. Fat deposits located around internal organs secrete chemicals and send signals which make cells more aggressive , imitating tumor growth, while also creating insulin resistance,leading to type 2 diabetes.

Nobel Laureate otto Warburg demonstrated that cancer cells consume and metabolize glucose at 200 times the normal rate.
Mortality rates are higher for cancer patients who have diabetes than those without the blood sugar disorder. Mortality of cancer patients with pre-existing diabetes is higher relative to non diabetic patients for all cancers combined and for most individual cancer sites and the risk appeared highest for diabetic cancer patients treated with oral diabetes drug or insulin, and when assessed further, insulin-treated patients were at higher risk.
Data from a number of recent studies have suggested that patients with diabetes taking insulin are at risk for increased rates of cancer diagnosis.
People with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for various cancers, and cancer mortality , exact mechanisms are not known – Insulin especially in high concentrations or may likely have a role in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation.
Both obesity and type 2 diabetes ( not type 1 diabetes ) are associated with an increased risk for cancer and increased mortality rates. Insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are common to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
One point has become abundantly clear, and this is that cancer must now be numbered among the complications of diabetes.
Cancer risk was found to increase with increasing dose of insulin, with a sixfold increased risk among patient taking the highest insulin dose.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with increased risk for several cancers including colon, postmenopausal breast, pancreatic , liver, endometrial and bladder cancer and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Type 2 diabetes is also linked to a modest decrease in the risk for prostate cancer.
Both type 1 and type 2 put people at risk of developing specific types of canceras, but also that this is much higher for women than it is for men. Women with diabetes are 27% likelier to develop cancer compared with healthy women and men with diabetes are 19% more likely to develop cancer than healthy men.
Even so, lifestyle changes that prevent or reverse diabetes with certainly cut cancer risk.But first of all we should prevent diabetes. Then we can prevent some cancer, and for those who do have diabetes, it should be controlled as much as possible through a healthy lifestyle.
